Join us in a wonderful evening “fireside chat” with Michael Dornbrook where we hear about the confluence of music, technology, and angel investing.
...
The founder of four companies, Michael Dornbrook spent much of his career as chief operating officer at Harmonix, which makes computer games for people who love music. Harmonix’s most famous product, Guitar Hero, became a huge hit, earning critical acclaim and breaking the record for the fastest videogame franchise to hit $1 billion in sales (it went on to sell $3 billion). Rock Band, Harmonix’s next franchise, broke this record by hitting $1 billion in sales in just over one year. Mike handled the major deals for the company, including the game publishing contracts, the Chinese manufacturing of all the drums and guitars, and the sale of the company to Viacom for over $700 million, including earnouts, one of the highest prices ever paid for a game developer, yielding the investors up to 220X. Among his many accomplishments, Mike launched over 40 best selling books, and is particularly proud of championing The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (so you can thank him for that)!
He retired from Harmonix in 2010 and has since become a prolific investor. He has risen to become a figure on the national early stage technology investment landscape with over 100 companies in his portfolio. He is also a board member and member of the Advisory Investment Committee of Common Angels which is now Converge Venture Partners. Michael is passionate helping entrepreneurs avoid the pitfalls so common in young companies and this shows in his many successful exits. He is an active participant as a coach, mentor and sometimes “adult supervision” for his companies.
